Maryland Drops State Song

The University of Maryland and their marching band, The Mighty Sound of Maryland, have agreed to discontinue playing the state’s song, “Maryland, My Maryland”.

This decision comes after the events in Charlottesville and the removal of Confederate statues in Baltimore a few weeks ago.

According to an article in the Baltimore Sun a university spokeswoman said they would “evaluate if is it consistent with the values of our institution.”

We heard from a few band members and alumni about this decision. One band member told us that he knew it would only be a matter of time before it was removed, but clearly the events over the past few weeks moved the time table up for the university.

The song was a pro-Confederate Battle Hymn and referred to the “Northern Scum” in it’s lyrics.
